Discover the forests of Austria!
From August 7th to 23rd 2016 Austria will be hosting the world’s biggest meeting of international forestry students. The IFSS (International Forestry Students’ Symposium) has been organised since 1973, each year in a different country. In recent years, the Symposium has visited such diverse countries as Canada, Turkey and South Korea. In 2016, local students from the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences Vienna (BOKU) will have the chance to organise this important event.
The guests from all over the world will have the opportunity to experience the diversity of Austrian forests and forestry first-hand during a two week tour which will take them throughout the country and even into neighbouring Bavaria, the largest federal state of Germany. There our friends from LC Freising from TU Munich are organizing one part of the tour. The programme is currently being planned and among the highlights are the opening ceremony in Vienna and proposed visits to leading wood-processing companies such as Binderholz and the Lenzing AG, as well as to the Austrian Federal Forests, the largest forest owner in Austria, the largest forest owner in Austria. Of course the participants of the IFSS will also get to see some of the most beautiful cultural treasures of Austria like the old town of Salzburg, the amazing scenery of Hallstadt, the Schönbrunn palace in Vienna. The visiting students will also have the chance to learn more about Austria’s forests and current forest research in Austria during interactive workshops with researchers from BOKU and the Austrian Research Centre for Forests. The IFSS is also the most important annual meeting of the International Forestry Students’ Association (IFSA). During the IFSS the General Assembly will take place and a new IFSA Board will be elected!
As the IFSS is a meeting organised by students for students and participation fees are kept as low as possible to give people from all over the world the chance to attend, generous sponsors are needed to make the event possible. The Austrian Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management and the Federal Forest Direction of Tyrol have thankfully already agreed to support the IFSS. At the same time, such an event would not be possible without a motivated organising team. Right now, the Organising Committee consisting of students from BOKU and the Technical University Munich who will coordinate the programme during the visit to Bavaria, are already working hard to organise an amazing event.
We are all looking forward to welcoming you at IFSS 2016!
